A freestyle ceramic cup from Minami-gama in Toki city, Gifu prefecture.
Shino-ware is originally from Mino Province and characterized by thick white glazes, red scorch marks, and a pinholed texture.
Nezumi(rat)-Shino, the original technique, starts with an application of iron slip over a white stoneware body. The surface slip coating is then carved to reveal the underlying clay. When covered with Shino glaze and fired, the revealed areas appear white while the iron slip remaining on the surface fires grey or red.
The white-striped lines add unique personality to the pottery.
