Kairagi is one of traditional techniques for Japanese pottery, originally for Edo chawan bowl which has a granular and crisp surface on the bottom of bowl.

Because of the gaps between the clay and the glaze at firing, the pottery starts to shrink and cracks on the surface appear. Depends on the type of clay, kiln, fuel, firing method, temperature, each appears differently.

The skin of ray fish wrapped around the handle of Japanese sword is called "Kairagi" and because it resembles the bowl's surface, so it's called the same name.

You can feel the aesthetic sense of Japan and it's the typical appeal of "Wabi Sabi" culture.
