Adorned with auspicious phoenix (houou) and peony (botan) motifs—traditional symbols of prosperity, longevity, and good fortune—this pair of Kutani-ware teacups (yunomi) is individually restored with gold and silver kintsugi joinery. Celebrated for its rich aka-e red enamels and expressive hand-painted detailing, Kutani porcelain boasts a distinguished history dating back nearly 370 years to the early Edo period in Kaga Province (present-day Ishikawa Prefecture). The contrasting gold and silver seam lines trace across the translucent white porcelain interior and vibrant red-and-gold exterior, creating a harmonious set that elevates centuries of Japanese ceramic heritage into a captivating wabi-sabi art piece.
