This Kutani-ware sake bottle (tokkuri) features an auspicious plum blossom (ume) motif, mended at the rim using yobitsugi to join distinct ceramic fragments with delicate golden seams. Renowned for its rich overglaze enamels and lavish gold ornamentation (kinrande), Kutani ware boasts a prestigious history dating back over 370 years to the early Edo period, originating in the mountain kilns of Kaga Province (present-day Ishikawa Prefecture). By uniting vibrant red-and-gold aka-e brushwork with modern material joinery, this one-of-a-kind vessel pairs centuries of ceramic heritage with a captivating expression of wabi-sabi.
